The Best Time to Visit Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a year-round city, but the seasons feel very different. Here is how to choose your timing based on weather, tulips, festivals, and crowds.

Spring (March-May)

The headline season. Tulip season peaks from mid-April (the nearby Keukenhof gardens are spectacular), and King's Day on 27 April turns the whole city into a giant orange street party and canal flotilla, book months ahead. The weather is mild and the city at its prettiest, though April showers are real, pack a waterproof.

Summer (June-August)

Long, warm days, packed terraces, canal swimming, and a full festival calendar including Amsterdam Pride and its famous Canal Parade in August. It is the busiest and most expensive time, with peak crowds at the museums, so book everything early and start your days before the queues.

Autumn (September-October)

A quietly excellent time. September keeps much of summer's warmth with thinner crowds, and October brings the Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE), the world's biggest electronic music conference and festival. Cosy, golden, and good value, with comfortable weather for walking.

Winter (November-February)

Cold, grey, and short on daylight, but atmospheric. The Amsterdam Light Festival illuminates the canals from late November, the museums are blissfully quiet, and on a rare hard freeze the canals can become natural skating rinks. Pack warm, waterproof layers and lean into the cosy 'gezellig' indoor life.

Quick recommendation

For the best balance of weather and crowds, aim for late April-May (for tulips and King's Day) or September. For festivals, time it to Pride (August) or ADE (October); for a quiet, atmospheric and cheaper trip, come in winter for the light festival.
