Amsterdam is compact and superbly connected, and most visitors barely need transit at all. Here is the simple version that works for almost everyone.
Getting Around Amsterdam
Walk first
The centre is small, the distances are short, and the canals are the attraction, so walking is often the best option. Just learn the one rule that keeps you safe: the red-paved lanes are for bikes, not pedestrians. Look both ways (twice) before crossing them, and never stop in them.
Trams, metro & buses (GVB)
The GVB network of trams, metro, and buses covers everything the canals don't. Pay by tapping a contactless bank card or phone on the readers as you board AND as you leave, or buy a GVB day/multi-day pass for unlimited rides. Trams are the workhorse of the centre; the metro is fastest for longer hops and to Noord and the south.
Free ferries to Noord
Behind Centraal Station, free passenger ferries cross the IJ to Amsterdam-Noord every few minutes, day and night, bikes and all. They are both transport and a mini harbour cruise, don't miss them.
Cycling
Amsterdam is the world's great cycling city, and renting a bike is a wonderful way to feel like a local, but only if you are confident in busy traffic. Use hand signals, stick to the bike lanes, lock up well (bike theft is rife), and never leave it in a tram track.
From Schiphol airport
The train from Schiphol to Centraal Station takes about 15-20 minutes and runs constantly, far cheaper and faster than a taxi. Buy at the machines or tap a contactless card at the NS gates.
FAQ
- How do I pay for public transport in Amsterdam?
- The easiest way is to tap a contactless bank card or phone on the pink readers when you board and again when you get off, the fare is calculated automatically. Alternatively, buy a GVB day or multi-day pass for unlimited travel.
- Should I rent a bike in Amsterdam?
- Only if you are comfortable cycling in heavy, fast-moving traffic, the locals are quick and the rules are strict. If you are unsure, a guided bike tour is a great, safer way to ride; otherwise the city is very walkable.
