The Sound of Music in Salzburg

More than sixty years on, fans still come to Salzburg to walk through The Sound of Music, and the city plays along with warmth and a wink. The good news is that the real filming locations are scattered across town and easy to string together on foot or by tour, and almost all of them are worth visiting on their own merits even if you have never seen the film. Mirabell Gardens, Nonnberg Abbey, and the Monchsberg viewpoints are free or cheap and sit in or above the Old Town; Hellbrunn and its gazebo take a short bus ride south; and the out-of-town sites are easiest by the classic coach tour. This guide walks through where the film was shot, what actually happened at each spot — and where Hollywood took liberties with the real von Trapp story — plus how to see them efficiently. Whether you hum every song or just want the prettiest corners of the city with a story attached, the route below ties them together. Save the locations you want and drop them into your plan.

Mirabell Gardens & the Do-Re-Mi steps

The most-visited location, and free. In the Baroque Mirabell Gardens, Maria and the children dance around the bronze Pegasus fountain and skip up the stone staircase for the finale of 'Do-Re-Mi'. From the steps, the flower beds line up perfectly with Hohensalzburg Fortress on the horizon — the single most photographed frame in Salzburg. Come at opening to have it to yourself. The gardens also feature the dwarf garden and the rose-covered Rosenhugel pergola seen in the sequence.

Nonnberg Abbey

The Benedictine Nonnberg Abbey, below the fortress, is where the real Maria von Trapp was a novice — and where the film's abbey scenes, including the opening and 'Maria', were shot in the courtyard. It is the oldest continuously operating convent in the German-speaking world and still active, so visit the church quietly and respect services. The walk up from the Old Town is short but steep.

Hellbrunn & the gazebo

The glass pavilion where 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' was sung now stands in the park at Hellbrunn Palace, south of the city, moved there from its original location so fans could visit. Hellbrunn's 400-year-old trick fountains and gardens make a fine half-day even setting the film aside; the gazebo is a short walk inside the grounds.

The Monchsberg & city scenes

The sweeping aerial and city views were filmed from the heights above town. The terrace by the Museum der Moderne on the Monchsberg gives the same kind of panorama over the Old Town and fortress that opens and closes the film. It is reached by a lift from Gstattengasse, and the view is free even without a museum ticket. Down in the Old Town, Residenzplatz and its fountain feature in 'I Have Confidence'.

Beyond the city: the tour

Several key locations sit outside Salzburg and are easiest to reach on the Original Sound of Music tour: Leopoldskron Palace and its lake (the back of the von Trapp villa), the gazebo's story, and the Mondsee basilica where the wedding was filmed, set among the Salzkammergut lakes. The 4-hour coach trip strings them together with the songs and the lake scenery, and is the most efficient way to see the out-of-town sites in one go.

A note on the real story

The film took liberties: the real von Trapp home was elsewhere, the family's escape was by train rather than over the mountains, and several scenes blend locations. Half the fun is spotting where Hollywood rearranged Salzburg — the city leans into it warmly, and the locations are lovely regardless.

FAQ

Can you visit the Sound of Music locations on your own?
Mostly, yes. Mirabell Gardens, Nonnberg Abbey, the Monchsberg terrace, and Residenzplatz are all in or near the Old Town and free or cheap to reach. Hellbrunn and its gazebo take a short bus ride. The out-of-town sites — Leopoldskron and the Mondsee church — are easiest by the guided tour.
Is the Sound of Music gazebo open to go inside?
The gazebo stands in the Hellbrunn Palace park and you can walk up to and around it, but it is usually kept locked to prevent accidents, so you cannot dance on the benches inside. It is still a popular photo stop within the gardens.
