The Best Time to Visit Kyoto

Kyoto rewards every season differently. Here is how to choose your timing based on weather, scenery, crowds, and festivals.

Spring (March-May)

Late March to mid-April brings the famous cherry blossom (sakura). The Philosopher's Path, Maruyama Park, and the riverbanks turn pink and the city is at its most romantic, and its most crowded. Book accommodation months ahead. By late April and May the blossoms give way to fresh green maples and mild, comfortable weather with noticeably thinner crowds.

Summer (June-August)

The rainy season runs through much of June, followed by hot, humid July and August. It is the season of the Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's greatest festivals, and of dining on the riverside kawayuka terraces. Start early, hydrate, and plan indoor or shaded stops in the afternoon.

Autumn (September-November)

Many visitors' favorite season. Late September and October are mild and pleasant, and from mid-November to early December the maples turn brilliant red and gold. Temples like Tofuku-ji and Eikando are extraordinary, and some open for special night illuminations. Expect peak crowds in the foliage window.

Winter (December-February)

Kyoto is quiet, crisp, and occasionally dusted with snow, which transforms Kinkaku-ji into a postcard. Crowds are at their lowest and prices soften. Pack warm layers and enjoy having the temples nearly to yourself.

Quick recommendation

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, target May, early June, or late September to October. For peak beauty and peak crowds, come for cherry blossom (late March-mid April) or autumn foliage (mid-November-early December), and book early.
