The Best Time to Visit Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires sits in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons are reversed from Europe and North America. Here is how to choose your timing based on weather, scenery, crowds, and festivals.

Spring (September-November)

Many travelers' favorite season. Temperatures are mild (roughly 14-24C / 57-75F), the crowds are manageable, and in November the city's jacaranda trees burst into purple bloom, especially around Recoleta and Palermo. Perfect weather for exploring the parks and walking the barrios. A top pick for first-time visitors.

Summer (December-February)

Hot and humid, with temperatures often pushing into the 30s C (high 80s F) and sticky nights. Many portenos leave for the coast, so the city is quieter and some restaurants close, but festivals and nightlife continue. Start early, seek shade in the afternoon, and enjoy long summer evenings and outdoor dining.

Autumn (March-May)

Another excellent window. The weather is pleasant and mild (around 22C / 72F), the summer heat has broken, and hotel occupancy is often at its lowest between April and June, meaning good deals. The Buenos Aires International Film Festival (BAFICI) lights up April.

Winter (June-August)

Cool and often damp, with temperatures around 8-15C (46-59F). It rarely freezes, but pack layers and a raincoat. This is the cheapest time to visit, with lower flight and hotel prices and the fewest tourists, and home to the world-famous Tango Festival in August.

Quick recommendation

For the best balance of good weather, manageable crowds, and reasonable prices, target spring (September-November), ideally catching the November jacaranda bloom, or autumn (March-May). Come in winter for the lowest prices and the tango festival, and brace for summer's heat if you visit December to February.
