When Is the Best Time to Visit Mendoza?

Mendoza is a year-round destination, but the experience shifts dramatically with the seasons. Harvest in autumn is the most atmospheric; spring is the easiest; summer is for the mountains.

The short answer

For the most vivid experience, visit in March or April, when the grape harvest (vendimia) is in full swing, the vines turn gold and red, and the region celebrates the Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia in early March. For mild weather and lighter crowds, come in spring (September to November). For adventure in the high Andes, choose summer (December to February).

Autumn (March-May): harvest season

This is the headline season. In the first half of March, Malbec reaches peak ripeness and wineries hum with activity, while the Vendimia festival fills the city with parades and concerts. Through April and May the vine leaves turn gold, orange, and red, making the vineyards exceptionally photogenic with the Andes behind them. Days are warm and comfortable. The catch is demand: wineries, vineyard restaurants, and hotels book up well ahead, so reserve early.

Spring (September-November): the sweet spot

Spring brings fresh green growth on the vines, blossom across the city's parks, and daytime temperatures around 20-25C, ideal for vineyard strolls and outdoor tastings. Crowds are moderate and pricing competitive. This is arguably the easiest time to plan a relaxed wine trip without the harvest-season scramble.

Summer (December-February): hot days, high mountains

Summer is hot and dry in the city, with intense afternoon sun, but it is the best window for the high Andes: the road toward Aconcagua is reliably open, the Mendoza River runs high for rafting (December to March has the best rapids), and Potrerillos lake is at its most inviting. Plan winery visits for the morning and save afternoons for shade, the pool, or the mountains.

Winter (June-August): quiet and crisp

Winter is the low season. The city is calm, prices drop, and the Andes are at their snowiest, providing dramatic backdrops and access to nearby ski areas. Wineries remain open and far less crowded, though some high-mountain roads and trekking routes are closed. It is a fine time for a slower, cheaper wine-focused trip.

Quick recommendation

Want the harvest atmosphere and don't mind booking ahead? Go in March-April. Want easy weather and fewer crowds? Go in spring (September-November). Want to combine wine with serious mountain adventure? Go in summer. There is no truly bad time, only different trade-offs.
