The Best Time to Visit Bariloche

Bariloche is a true year-round destination, and its seasons are mirror-flipped from the Northern Hemisphere. Here is how to choose your timing based on weather, scenery, crowds, and what you want to do.

Summer (December-February)

Peak season. Warm, sunny days, often up to the mid-20s Celsius, and long daylight hours make summer ideal for hiking, kayaking, the Circuito Chico, and the Seven Lakes drive. It is also the busiest and priciest time, coinciding with Argentine summer holidays, so book accommodation and popular excursions well ahead.

Autumn (March-May)

Many travellers' favourite season. Temperatures cool, crowds thin once schools resume, and the deciduous forests around Colonia Suiza and the lakeshore turn brilliant gold, amber, and crimson, peaking in the second half of April. Hiking conditions are excellent and rates are more affordable.

Winter (June-September)

Ski season. Cerro Catedral, South America's largest resort, draws skiers and snowboarders from across the continent, and the town fills with a winter-sports crowd. Snow blankets the peaks, and the chocolate cafes are at their cosiest. July (Argentine winter holidays) is the busiest stretch.

Spring (September-November)

A quieter shoulder season as the snow melts and wildflowers bloom. Days warm steadily, the lakes and forests turn lush, and crowds are light, making it great for hiking and biking before the summer rush. Weather can still be variable, so pack layers.

Quick recommendation

For the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds, target late spring (November) or autumn (March to mid-April), when the foliage is spectacular. Come in summer for the full hiking-and-lakes experience, or winter (July to September) for skiing at Cerro Catedral, and book early for both peaks.
