Hallstatt sits at the heart of the Salzkammergut, Austria's lake district, so the village is also a springboard for some of the country's finest mountain and lake scenery. The Dachstein towers across the water, a famous mirror-lake hides in the next valley, and a string of historic lake towns lies within easy reach. Here are the trips worth building a second or third day around.
Best Day Trips from Hallstatt
The Dachstein and Obertraun
The big one. Across the lake in Obertraun, a three-stage cable car climbs the Dachstein massif to the floodlit Giant Ice Cave, the vast Mammut Cave, and a summit at 2,100 metres with the 5fingers platform jutting over a sheer drop. It is about 10 to 15 minutes by car from Hallstatt, or reachable by ferry and a short hop. Give it half a day and pick a clear day for the views.
Gosausee
In the next valley west, about 30 minutes away, the Vorderer Gosausee delivers one of Austria's most famous views: the glaciated Hoher Dachstein reflected, on a windless morning, in clear green water. An easy, almost flat loop of about 4.5 km circles the lake in around 90 minutes, with options to walk on to the higher Gosau lakes. A gentle, scenic half-day.
Bad Ischl
About 20 minutes north, Bad Ischl was the summer capital of the Habsburg empire, where Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) held court. The Kaiservilla and its park, the old spa architecture and the famous Zauner pastry shop make it an easy, history-rich contrast to the village - and it is right on the route to and from Salzburg.
More Salzkammergut lakes
With more time or a car, the lake district opens up: pretty St. Wolfgang on the Wolfgangsee with its pilgrimage church and cog railway up the Schafberg; lakeside Gmunden on the Traunsee with its castle on the water; and the quiet, photogenic Altausseersee. Each is an easy day out and shows a calmer, less crowded side of the region than Hallstatt itself.
Getting around
The Dachstein and Bad Ischl are doable by public transport (ferry and bus, or train), but Gosausee and the smaller lakes are much easier with a car. If you are relying on buses, check the regional timetables in advance, as services thin out in the evening and off-season.
FAQ
- What is the best day trip from Hallstatt?
- For mountains, the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car with its ice caves and 5fingers platform in Obertraun. For an easy, scenic walk, the Vorderer Gosausee, where the Dachstein reflects in the lake. Both are short hops from the village.
- Can you do day trips from Hallstatt without a car?
- Yes for the Dachstein (ferry plus a short hop to Obertraun) and Bad Ischl (bus or train). Gosausee and the smaller Salzkammergut lakes are possible by Postbus but much easier with a car, especially later in the day and off-season.
