Innsbruck is small enough to walk end to end, but each district has its own character — and where you base yourself shapes your trip.
Innsbruck Neighborhoods
Altstadt (Old Town)
The medieval core, all arcaded lanes and painted facades around the Golden Roof. It's the most atmospheric place to stay and walk, with the cathedral, Hofburg and Hofkirche on your doorstep — though it's also the busiest and priciest.
Maria-Theresien-Straße & Innenstadt
Just south of the Old Town, the grand baroque boulevard is the city's shopping and café spine, lined with department stores, brand shops and brasseries and capped by the Triumphal Arch. Central, lively and well connected.
Wilten
A characterful district south of the centre near the main station and Bergisel, with a student and craft-beer streak (the Tribaun is here), the ornate Wilten Basilica and good-value places to eat and sleep.
Mariahilf & St. Nikolaus
Across the Inn from the Old Town, this is where you'll find the postcard row of colourful riverside houses, small galleries and quieter cafés — a lovely, photogenic base a two-minute bridge walk from the centre.
Hungerburg & Hötting
The terraced slopes above the city, reached by the funicular. Hungerburg has panoramic hotels, the Alpenzoo and the first cable-car stage; Hötting is a leafy residential hillside with views. Best for travellers who want mountains over nightlife.
Saggen
A genteel late-19th-century quarter of villas and tree-lined streets northeast of the centre, beside the Hofgarten — calm and walkable, with a more local feel.
Quick recommendation
For a first visit, base yourself in or just beside the Altstadt or on Maria-Theresien-Straße to walk to everything. For views and value, cross the river to Mariahilf; for mountains, head up to Hungerburg.
FAQ
- Where should I stay in Innsbruck for the first time?
- In or near the Altstadt or along Maria-Theresien-Straße. Both put you within walking distance of the main sights, restaurants and the funicular to the mountains.
- Where is the colourful-houses photo taken?
- Along the Inn in the Mariahilf/St. Nikolaus district on the north bank — shoot from the south bank or the Innsteg footbridge to line the houses up against the Nordkette.
