Vienna rewards every season differently, from rose-filled summer gardens to glittering winter ball rooms. Here is how to choose your timing based on weather, scenery, crowds, and the city's full calendar of events.
The Best Time to Visit Vienna
Spring (April to June)
Arguably the best window. The palace gardens at Schoenbrunn, the Belvedere, and the Volksgarten burst into bloom, the weather warms into the comfortable low 20s C, and the cultural season is in full swing with the Wiener Festwochen arts festival from May. Crowds build toward summer but rarely overwhelm. Pack layers for cool evenings.
Summer (July and August)
Warm, long-dayed, and lively, with temperatures often in the high 20s C and a festival atmosphere - the Donauinselfest music festival in June, the ImPulsTanz dance festival from mid-July, open-air film nights at the City Hall, and beach bars along the Danube Canal. Many Viennese leave on holiday and some restaurants close briefly, so the city feels a touch quieter. Heat and the occasional thunderstorm aside, it is an easy, enjoyable time to visit.
Autumn (September and October)
Another sweet spot: mild, golden weather, thinning crowds, the return of the cultural season, and the start of the wine-tavern (Heuriger) season in the city's vineyard fringes. September is warm and clear; October cools and colours the parks. Excellent for museums, walking, and day trips to the Wachau at harvest time.
Winter and the Christmas markets (November to February)
Vienna is cold (often near or below freezing) but enchanting. From mid-November the Christmas markets fill the squares in front of the City Hall, Schoenbrunn, and across the center with mulled wine, crafts, and lights, running to around Christmas Eve. The New Year's Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic opens January, and the famous ball season peaks with the Opera Ball in February. January and February are otherwise quiet and the cheapest months to visit.
Ball season
From New Year through Shrove Tuesday, Vienna hosts hundreds of formal balls, the grandest being the Vienna Opera Ball in February at the State Opera. Even if you do not attend, the season lends the city a particular glamour, and dance courses and concerts abound.
Quick recommendation
For the best balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds, target late April to June or September to October. Come in December for the Christmas markets and winter atmosphere, or in January and February for the lowest prices, the ball season, and near-empty museums - just pack for the cold.
