The Best Time to Visit Florence

Florence rewards different travellers in different seasons. Here is how to choose your timing based on weather, crowds, queues, and price.

Spring (March-May)

Spring is one of the loveliest times to visit, with mild days and the Boboli Gardens in bloom. The catch is the calendar: Easter, plus the Italian public holidays of 25 April (Liberation Day) and 1 May (Labour Day), make late spring very crowded and pricey, and thousands of school groups (who often enter museums free) lengthen the lines at the Uffizi and Accademia. Early March and the quieter midweek days are the sweet spot.

Summer (June-August)

The busiest and hottest season, with temperatures often in the 30s C (85-95 F) and museum queues that can stretch to two or three hours for walk-ups. The upside is long daylight and a full events calendar; the trick is to book every major sight in advance, start at opening time, and rest in the shade or a gallery through the worst of the afternoon heat. Locals largely leave in August, so the city feels more touristed but less Florentine.

Autumn (September-October)

For many, the best overall window. September and October bring warm but comfortable weather, the Tuscan harvest in the surrounding hills, and noticeably thinner crowds than summer. It is ideal for pairing the city with a Chianti wine day trip and for long walks along the Arno.

Winter (November-February)

The low season. Weather is cool and damp but rarely harsh by European standards, prices for flights and hotels drop sharply, and museum lines are the shortest of the year - you can often walk up to the Uffizi. Pack layers and enjoy having David and Botticelli almost to yourself.

Quick recommendation

For the best balance of good weather, manageable crowds, and value, target late September to October or early-to-mid spring outside the Easter and early-May holiday cluster. For the lowest prices and shortest queues, come in winter; for long days and full events, accept the heat and crowds of summer and book everything ahead. Tuesday to Thursday are the calmest days in any season.

FAQ

What is the cheapest time to visit Florence?
November to March, excluding the Christmas and New Year period. Flights and hotels are at their lowest, and museum queues are the shortest of the year. The trade-off is cooler, sometimes rainy weather.
What months should I avoid in Florence?
July and August for extreme heat and the thickest crowds, and the late-April to early-May cluster of Easter plus the 25 April and 1 May holidays, when the city is crowded, expensive, and full of school groups.
When are museum queues shortest in Florence?
In winter (November to March) and on midweek days (Tuesday to Thursday) in any season. Year-round, booking timed-entry tickets in advance is the single best way to skip the longest lines at the Uffizi, Accademia, and dome.
