The Best Time to Visit Hakone

Hakone is a year-round destination, but the season you choose changes everything, from your odds of seeing Mount Fuji to the scenery and the crowds. Here is how to time your visit based on weather, views, and what you most want from the trip.

Winter (December-February): best for Mount Fuji

If seeing Mount Fuji is your priority, come in winter. The cold, dry air produces the clearest skies of the year, and the mountain is visible far more often between November and February than in summer. Winter is also the most rewarding onsen season, when soaking in an outdoor bath against snow-dusted hills is unbeatable. Crowds are thinner outside the New Year holidays. Pack warm layers and aim for a clear morning at Lake Ashi or the ropeway.

Spring (March-May): greenery and roses

Spring brings fresh mountain greenery, milder weather, and the start of the rose season at Gora Park in late May. Cherry blossom is more modest here than in the cities, but the hills come alive with colour. It is a pleasant, comfortable time to ride the loop, though Fuji visibility is less reliable than in winter.

Summer (June-August): rainy and hazy

Early summer is the rainy season, and July and August are humid and hazy, the least reliable months for Fuji, which often hides behind cloud. The upside is lush green scenery, the hydrangeas lining the Tozan railway in June, and cooler mountain air than Tokyo. Onsen are pleasant year-round. Expect this to be a busy holiday season.

Autumn (October-November): the all-rounder

Many consider autumn the best overall season. The hills turn red and gold, the silver pampas grass (susuki) at Sengokuhara glows in the low sun from mid-September to mid-November, and the crisp air sharpens Fuji visibility. It is spectacular but popular, so expect crowds, especially on weekends in November.

Quick recommendation

For the best chance of a clear Mount Fuji and great onsen weather, come in winter. For the finest scenery and a strong shot at Fuji, target autumn (late October to November). Whatever the season, start early, and remember Fuji is shy, treat a clear view as a bonus rather than a guarantee.
