The Best Day Trips from Kanazawa

Kanazawa makes an excellent base for exploring the Hokuriku region, from UNESCO-listed thatched-roof villages to traditional hot springs and dramatic coastline. Here are the trips worth taking and how to reach them.

Shirakawa-go & Gokayama

The most popular day trip, and for good reason. Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage village of steep thatched-roof gassho-zukuri farmhouses set in a mountain valley, photogenic in every season and unforgettable under winter snow. Direct Hokutetsu/Nohi highway buses run from Kanazawa Station West Gate (bus stop #4) and reach the village in about 75 minutes; one-way fares are around 2,800 yen and seat reservations are required, so book ahead online. Nearby Gokayama is a quieter cluster of the same farmhouses with a fraction of the visitors, often combined on a single bus tour.

Takayama

Often paired with Shirakawa-go, Takayama is a beautifully preserved Edo-period town in the mountains of Gifu, famous for its old merchant streets, morning markets, and sake breweries. Buses continue from Shirakawa-go, making a Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, Takayama loop a popular (if long) single-day or overnight route.

Kaga Onsen

For a relaxed hot-spring day, Kaga Onsen is reachable by JR limited express in about 40 minutes. The area's traditional bathing villages, Yamashiro, Yamanaka, and others, offer public baths from around 500 yen, plus craft studios and riverside walks.

The Noto Peninsula

Stretching north into the Sea of Japan, the Noto Peninsula offers dramatic cliffs, terraced rice paddies, and sleepy fishing villages, including the Shiroyone Senmaida rice terraces and the Wajima morning market. A rental car is the most practical way to explore, as public transport thins out beyond Nanao; the Noto Kagaribi limited express reaches Wakura Onsen in under an hour for those relying on rail.

Quick recommendation

If you only do one day trip, make it Shirakawa-go, it is the easiest to reach by direct reserved bus and the most rewarding. Add Takayama if you have a full long day, choose Kaga Onsen for a slower hot-spring escape, or rent a car for the Noto Peninsula coastline.
