Nara rewards every season, and it is consistently less crowded than nearby Kyoto. Here is how to choose your timing based on weather, scenery, crowds, and festivals.
The Best Time to Visit Nara
Spring (March-May)
Late March to mid-April brings cherry blossom to Nara Park and Mount Wakakusa, with the deer grazing under pink canopies, a quintessential Nara scene. Weather is mild and ideal for walking, though weekends draw day-trippers. By May the blossoms give way to fresh green and comfortable temperatures.
Summer (June-August)
The rainy season runs through much of June, followed by hot, humid July and August. The forest paths around Kasuga Taisha offer shade, and the Obon Mantoro lantern festival (around August 14-15) lights all three thousand of the shrine's lanterns for a magical evening. Start early and plan shaded or indoor stops in the afternoon heat.
Autumn (October-November)
Many travelers' favorite season. Days are crisp and clear, and from late November the maples around the park and temples turn brilliant red and gold. The combination of foliage, deer, and ancient architecture is superb, with smaller crowds than Kyoto's autumn rush.
Winter (December-February)
Nara is quiet and cold in winter, with the lowest crowds of the year. The spectacular Wakakusa Yamayaki in late January sets the entire grassy slope of Mount Wakakusa ablaze, capped by fireworks, one of the region's most dramatic festivals. The Setsubun Mantoro lantern festival lights Kasuga Taisha on February 3.
Beating the crowds
Whatever the season, the golden rule is to arrive before 9am. Nara fills with day-trippers from Kyoto and Osaka by late morning, so an early start gives you the deer lawns, the Great Buddha, and the lantern paths in relative calm. Staying overnight lets you enjoy the park at dawn and dusk entirely differently.
Quick recommendation
For the best balance of weather and scenery, target April for cherry blossom or late October to November for autumn color. For festivals, come for the Wakakusa Yamayaki (late January) or a Mantoro lantern night (February 3 or August 14-15). Any time of year, start early.
