Getting To & Around Nara

Nara is one of the easiest places to reach in the Kansai region, and once you arrive almost everything is walkable. Here is the simple version that works for nearly every visitor.

Getting there from Kyoto

Two railways link Kyoto and Nara. The Kintetsu limited express runs from Kyoto Station to Kintetsu-Nara Station in about 35 minutes (around 1,160 yen), with cheaper local and express services taking 45 minutes or so. The JR Nara Line also departs Kyoto Station and takes 45-60 minutes depending on whether you catch a local or rapid train. If you hold a Japan Rail Pass, the JR option is covered.

Getting there from Osaka

From Osaka-Namba, the Kintetsu line reaches Kintetsu-Nara in roughly 35-45 minutes for around 680 yen. From JR Osaka Station, the Yamatoji rapid runs to JR Nara in about 50 minutes and is covered by the JR Pass.

Which station to use

There are two stations, and it matters which one you pick. Kintetsu-Nara Station is a 5-10 minute walk from the park and the first deer, while JR Nara Station is about 20 minutes further out. Aim for Kintetsu-Nara whenever you can.

Rail passes

For a Kyoto-Nara-Osaka loop in a day, the Kintetsu Rail Pass (1-day) can be good value, covering unlimited Kintetsu trains plus some Nara Kotsu buses. If you already hold a Japan Rail Pass, use the JR lines instead. For most single day trips, a standard ticket or an IC card (ICOCA/Suica) is simplest.

Getting around once you arrive

Central Nara is compact and pedestrian-friendly. From Kintetsu-Nara Station you can walk to the deer park, Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, and Naramachi, and the natural sightseeing arc connects them all on foot in a single day. Nara Kotsu buses loop around the park and out to farther sights if you tire of walking, and taxis are easy to find at the stations. An IC card works on buses and trains alike.

Quick recommendation

From Kyoto or Osaka, take the Kintetsu line to Kintetsu-Nara Station, then explore entirely on foot. Reserve buses or taxis only if you want to reach outlying temples or are short on time.

FAQ

JR or Kintetsu to Nara, which is better?
Kintetsu is usually better for sightseeing because Kintetsu-Nara Station is much closer to the park and temples than JR Nara. Use JR only if you hold a Japan Rail Pass, in which case the JR Nara Line from Kyoto or Osaka is covered.
Do I need a car or buses in Nara?
No. The main sights around Nara Park, Todai-ji, Kasuga Taisha, and Naramachi are all within walking distance of Kintetsu-Nara Station. Nara Kotsu buses and taxis are available for outlying temples or if you prefer not to walk.
