The Best Time to Visit Nikko

Nikko changes dramatically with the seasons, and its mountain elevation means the highlands and the town colour at different times. Here is how to choose your timing based on weather, scenery, and crowds.

Autumn (late September-November)

This is Nikko's signature season and the busiest. Autumn colour starts high and works its way down: it peaks around Lake Chuzenji and the Irohazaka winding road in mid to late October, then reaches the town and the shrines in the first half of November. The maples at Ryuzu Falls and along the lakeshore are spectacular, and Kegon Falls framed in red and gold is one of Japan's classic views. Expect heavy traffic on the Irohazaka road and packed buses on weekends, so go early and consider a weekday.

Spring (April-May)

Cherry blossoms in the Nikko area typically bloom from late April to early May, later than Tokyo because of the altitude, followed by the fresh green of new leaves. The shrines look beautiful against the blossom and crowds are far lighter than in autumn. The highlands are still cool, with some snow lingering at higher elevations early in the season.

Summer (June-August)

Nikko is a classic summer escape. While Tokyo swelters, the highlands around Lake Chuzenji stay pleasantly cool, and the waterfalls run full. The rainy season brings showers through much of June, but July and August are green, lush, and a welcome relief from the lowland heat. Hiking the Senjogahara marshland and the Okunikko trails is at its best now.

Winter (December-February)

Winter is quiet, crisp, and atmospheric. The shrines are at their least crowded, occasionally dusted with snow, and Kegon Falls can partly freeze into dramatic ice formations. The trade-off is cold mountain temperatures and reduced bus schedules to the highlands, so check timetables before heading up to the lake.

Quick recommendation

For the most dramatic scenery, come in mid to late October for the highland foliage or early November for colour in the town, and book accommodation well ahead. For lighter crowds with lovely weather, target late April to May for blossom and green, or summer for the cool highlands.
